First Day of Junior Year

Today I started my junior year of high school. For one to say that I was stressed about this day is an understatement. I was freaking out about this day.

I started my day bright and early at 6:00 am. I got up and made a cup of green tea and proceeded to make my bed. I then made breakfast and ate, and then I got ready for my day. When I got to school I had to turn in a few forms and get my macbook, but after that my school day actually started.

First Block I have APUSH (AP United States History). My teacher is great, and I feel like this class will be a good one. I’m not friends with that many people in this class but I do have a few. because this is an advanced class we received homework right away. I have like 30 something pages to read tonight, but thats okay!

Second Block I have AP Language and Composition. I had to turn in my summer reading report and we got to know each other. My teacher is so fun and upbeat and really loud but I know that I’m going to enjoy her class.

Third Block I have AP Art History and my teacher is just a little crazy but the good kind and he has so many funny stories to tell. I also have homework in this class too and its a lot of reading as well but again, I’m okay with that.

Fourth Block I have my favorite class Food and Nutrition. The teacher is so sweet and she is funny. She has so many funny stories too and I am really glad to have her for a teacher.

 

I think this semester is going to be a great semester and I’m really excited to see what it has in store for me.

Healthy Life Means Happy Life

I always strive to be healthy, but it is a very hard thing to do. I have found some things that seem to be helping me and now I want to share them with you.

First things first I want to say: being healthy is not easy and there will be times that you feel as if you have failed. If you want to lose or gain weight and you don’t see instant results then that does not mean it is not working. You have to give it time.

Now here is what I am doing to live a healthier life.

  1. Meal planning and prepping. Every Sunday I sit down and make out my meals for the week. I decide what I want to eat and write down what that is (this is the panning part) I make sure that I have everything I need and if I am missing something then I make a run to the grocery store. Next I prepare, I make my oatmeal balls that I eat as snacks, I also make my greek yogurt ranch dip that tastes amazing with just about anything. Another thing I do is wash all my fruits and vegetables and cut most of them up. This makes me more likely to grab them when I need a little bit of food. I try to make foods that can be made ahead of time on Sunday and then I store them in the fridge or freezer (I like to cook my chicken breasts and then refreeze it so that all i have to do is let it defrost and heat it up). For dinner every night I drink a meal replacement shake. It gives me protein and helps to refuel my body.
  2. 30 minutes of cardio each day. Some days it is hard for me to go to the gym or workout but I make sure I get at least 30 minutes of cardio. I live right next to a park so usually (weather permitting) I take a nice walk and enjoy the weather.
  3. Gym at least three times a week. I go to the gym at least three times a week. one day to work on my upper body, one day for my lower body, and one day for a highly intense cardio session. I also spend some time working on my flexibility while at the gym.
  4. Waking up early. In the summer I like to be up and moving by 8 and during the school year I like to be up by 5:30. This is to allow me to eat a healthy breakfast, drink a glass or two of water, and a cup of green tea and/or coffee for a little caffeine. Waking up early also gives me the chance to get something done before I go to school or work making my day feel much more productive.
  5. Read a little every day. I make sure to read a little bit every day, even if it is only a chapter or two. I read anything that I feel like just to engage my mind in something that is good for it.
  6. Pamper Myself. This one is soooo important. Pampering yourself leads to a healthy mind and it can make you feel so much better about who you are. I like to take a nice bath and maybe use a bath bomb. I make sure my body is shaved and moisturized and I love to do a relaxing face mask.

 

All of these things are what I do to help myself stay on track to living a healthy life. You can use these tips to help you get into the swing of a healthier life too!

 

 

Homemade Rice Bowl

The other night I decided to make something new for me. A rice bowl, and let me tell you; it was delicious. I want to share the recipe with all of y’all because I think it is something that people may enjoy.

  • The Ingredients:
    • 1lb ground beef
    • 1 cup uncooked rice
    • 2 cups of water (for rice)
    • packet of fajita seasoning
    • 1 small onion
    • 1 jalapeno
    • corn, carrots, and green beans (I used a frozen mixture of these three things)
    • cilantro seasoning
    • lime juice
    • butter or oil of choice (for sauteeing onion and jalapeno
    • salt and pepper
  • The Directions
    • In a medium skillet combine chopped onion, jalapeno, and small amount of butter or oil. Cook until the onions are a nice brown color.
      • When onions are brown, add in ground beef and cook until done and then mix in fajita seasoning
    • In a medium saucepan combine water and rice with a little bit of sauce. When rice is done add in cilantro and salt and pepper. Lastly add in lime juice until the lime flavoring is just right for you.
    • For the vegetable follow the directions on the frozen package or warm in a saucepan if using canned goods add some butter, salt, and pepper to taste.
    • On a plate or in a bowl put rice, then meat, and last add the vegetables on top.

 

There you have it, my very own rice bowl recipe. I plan on trying this same recipe just with different meats and maybe a few different vegetables.

Procrastination

Procrastination, a word the is familiar to many. I personally am extremely guilty of procrastination. I have put off completing my summer reading assignment because of… (list reasons here…). I really shouldn’t though. I should have completed way more by now than I have and I honestly feel a little mad at myself for procrastinating.

I have some tips on how to not procrastinate that I honestly should have put into play before now.

  1. Use a planner! Seriously, this is no joke. Plan out your days. If you have to work make sure you put that down. Any events you have going on, no matter how large or small, write them in.. (include travelling and rest times when putting in events). Honestly I prefer to use a physical planner instead of one on my phone because I feel that writing it down makes it way more real than when I write it in my phone. I plan everything. And it makes my life so much easier.
  2. Get adequate sleep. Go to sleep and wake up around the same time each day. Also try to get a minimum of eight hours a night. The better your sleep schedule the more likely you are to stay on top of things.
  3. Going along with number two, stop the caffeine intake around 3 to 5 hours before you plan on going to sleep, it will make it easier to fall and stay asleep. Also put down the electronics an hour before bed. No TV, phone, laptop, etc. Instead try to journal about your day, or pick up a book to read (Not a book for school or work, but one for pleasure.)
  4. Go to the gym. Some of you may be wondering why the gym. Yes it takes up some time but your body will perform better when working if you go to the gym. Your brain will have better ability to function and remember, and it helps you sleep better! (Please note I do not mean you have to go to an actual gym, going for a walk in your neighborhood will work just fine)
  5. Have a life! Schedule time for friends and fun events. If you don’t make time for these things then you will randomly push other stuff to the side for them and then you end up behind on tasks that need completion.

A Simple, Cheap, and Fun Date

Today, I got to spend a full day with the guy that I am blessed to call my best friend and boyfriend. We went to downtown Hot Springs and walked around for nearly 6 hours.

Its simple because it takes no planning whatsoever. You just go and do, there are multiple stores and boutiques to walk into, multiple museums, and many other attractions in such a small area.

Its cheap because you are not required to buy anything. There is the ability to just walk and see everything and if you don’t buy something then it isn’t a big deal. And even if you do end up wanting a souvenir or some food there are plenty of cheap and delicious options just waiting for you to find.

Lastly its fun because you can: spend time with the one you love ( or like a great deal if you’re not quite there yet), I know for me and my boyfriend that we don’t spend any time on our phone when we are doing something like this, And you also get to spend time in nature with lots of walking around and it is fun to see everything that is around you.

Next time you are looking for a good date idea but don’t really have the money to spare on one then consider going somewhere nearby to a historic downtown area. It may require a little research and maybe even some driving but it is worth it!

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

Speak, I don’t even know where to begin. This book is eye opening, and heart shattering. When you think about what a young girl goes through after a sexual assault, you may not think of this. The main character of this book was scarred to such a significant amount that she could not even speak. In this book we get the privilege, and yes I do mean privilege, to see the world through Melinda’s eyes, to hear the thoughts Melinda is thinking.

Melinda is so emotionally traumatized about her sexual assault that she does not refer to her assaulter by name. She is so hurt that she does not even actually mention the words rape or sexual assault until you are deep into the book.

Laurie Halse Anderson did a phenomenal job in capturing just what sexual assault can do to a person. The thoughts that a person thinks, the feelings that a person feels. It is all there. Being a victim of sexual assault myself, I can say just how real Melinda’s thoughts and feelings are. I can attest to the fact that the damage sexual assault can do to a person is exactly how described in this book.

But Anderson also did an amazing job in depicting how high school life is rough on a teenager, and how some teachers truly don’t help at all. And she showed how sometimes all it takes is one person to help a struggling kid to open up.

If you have never read Speak then I highly recommend it. It is an amazingly told story, and once I picked it up I could not put it down. And when I finished the book, I cried… Yes actual tears, the kind that leave me searching for tissues. I cried because it was over, but not only for that. I also cried because Melinda got justice, I cried because Melinda spoke again, I cried because friendships that Melinda had lost were restored. And lastly… I cried because this beautifully written book made me look back at how bad I was hurt from my experiences and it made me realize that I am not alone in the struggle that I incur every single day when I get out of bed.

This book will probably be one of the most eye opening books you will ever read. So go get a copy today. And don’t be afraid to shed a few tears.

My First Hiking Adventure

The other day I went hiking… For the first time… With a bunch of other, first time hikers. Most people would think that this was a recipe for disaster. But it wasn’t. My friends and I went to Pinnacle Mountain and hiked a total of about 4 miles.

I was a little scared, July 2016 I broke my right foot and ankle really bad, and I only recently recovered from it. There is still a little displacement in my foot from it. I haven’t done a strenuous activity such as hiking so I was worried I might fall and hurt myself all over again. I did fall but I didn’t get hurt, just a little bruised. I stood back up walked off the pain, and continued this four mile hike.

The hike was amazing, the weather was nice, not too hot or cold. The view we had from many different spots was beautiful.

I definitely plan on hiking again. I plan on it for a few reasons:

  1. The view you get is so beautiful
  2. The peacefulness from being out in nature
  3. The workout you get without having to stress about working out
  4. It’s a great way to spend quality time with friends

I love having the ability to go hiking and living about 45 minutes from a mountain with a beautiful view makes it even better. I can’t wait to lace up my favorite pair of nikes and go out on that mountain again!
